<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 9.5pt;">Something
to Think About – A Firm Foundation<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div align="center" style="background: white; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 9.5pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="background: white;">
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 9.5pt;">Last month, I had the privilege of visiting some Army Engineers
at several of their job sites during some Annual Training. After visiting
almost every site on a daily basis, I came to the conclusion that it's amazing
what a difference two weeks can make.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white;">
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 9.5pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="background: white;">
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 9.5pt;">When these soldiers arrived at one site, there was nothing more
than six telephone poles in an otherwise empty lot. As time went on, I begin to
see progress starting to take place. At first, it was just a few boards here
and there. Then, I saw a platform, and a landing, and then finally some steps.
By the time these skillful young men and women were finished, that pile of
lumber and power tools which stood before me on that first day had been
transformed into a beautiful archery tower, complete with a roof, railings, and
all of the bells and whistles.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white;">
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 9.5pt;">Another one of their sites came with a giant slab of cement
poured and ready for the “50 man classroom” which came to them as a kit. Although
not every piece fit together like it should have, this group worked together to
meet deadlines and to make sure that this project would stand the test of time.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white;">
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 9.5pt;">What was the common link between these two job sites which
allowed these projects to be quickly and safely completed? It was the
foundation upon which they were built. Without a firm foundation, neither one
of these groups would have finished their project, or if they did, the end
result would not have met the appropriate standards.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white;">
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 9.5pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="background: white;">
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 9.5pt;">The principle of having a firm foundation is nothing new, and, coincidentally,
it can be applied throughout the rest of our lives as well. This principle is
discussed in Matthew 7:24-27, which tells of two men. One of them built his
house upon a firm foundation and saw it stand against the raging storm. The
other one built it upon uncertain ground. He witnessed his own creation come
crashing down around him. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white;">
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 9.5pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="background: white;">
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 9.5pt;">Weather we are putting together a building, building a
friendship, or starting a new positive habit in our lives to replace an old one,
the foundation we lay in the beginning stages will be imperative to the end
result.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white;">
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 9.5pt;">Over two weeks I was with these soldiers, I witnessed progress
both on the worksites and within the unit as well. As the physical walls went
up on the projects, many hindering barriers came down. A good example of this
is the crew which was putting together the archery tower. Its crew started off
as two distinct shifts. As time went on, however, the first shift started staying
later, and the second one began to arrive earlier.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="background: white;">
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 9.5pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="background: white;">
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 9.5pt;">By the time the tower was complete, these two groups had decided
that they wanted nothing more than to put their own needs aside in order to
help their fellow soldier. They realized that since they started with a good
foundation and were working towards the same goals, the more they gave to this
project… the more they received.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div style="background: white;">
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 9.5pt;">Make sure to build firm foundations in all aspects of your life
so that you will stand firm when the storms of life come your way.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt;">Something to Think About - A Time for Everything</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt;">As the hands of the clock inevitably start off in the morning hours, the early time in our life is spent being transformed from a helpless infant to a child which can walk, talk, and</span><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt;"> perform other simple tasks.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt;">As time goes on, we become teenager who is interested in not much more than getting a car, hanging out with our friends, and dating. Eventually, when it is time to settle down… we find that special someone who we want to spend the rest of our life with. As our biological clock continues to tick, we become more focused on the time for having children of our own, so that they can put us through everything we put our own parents through while we simultaneously attempt to balance our career and social activities in the process. Eventually, we spoil our grandchildren and retire. And then, just as most of us do on a daily basis now, we will most assuredly ask the question, “Where has the day gone?”</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt;">Those of us who are old enough… or who have ever listened to our parents’ record collection… may remember a song which I find very applicable. It called Turn! Turn! Turn! (or “To Everything There is a Season”) And was performed by the Byrds on their 1965 Album by the same name.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; background-image: initial; background-repeat: initial; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt;">Part of the lyrics read, “</span><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt;">To everything (turn, turn, turn) There is a season (turn, turn, turn)<br />And a time to every purpose, under heaven A time to be born, a time to die...” By far, the most unique thing about this song is the fact that every word of it, save for the occasional “Turn! Turn! Turn!” is taken straight out of the book of Ecclesiastes chapter three. I love this passage of the Scriptures, mostly because it was written several thousand years ago, it still rings with a truth which is often reiterated even to this day.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; background-image: initial; background-repeat: initial; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; background-image: initial; background-repeat: initial; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt;">We all know that if we want to progress to the next stage in our life, we must spend at least 13 years in school. Yet we also realize that while we are there, especially during the high school years, that time can be divided up. There is a time to study and a time for sports and a time for dating and a time to just go out and have some good, clean fun.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; background-image: initial; background-repeat: initial; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; background-image: initial; background-repeat: initial; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt;">We also know that when we hit the career stage, we can divide that up as well. The first thing we learn is that there is a time at which we must arrive to work, and if we don’t, we’ll be looking for a new place to work. After we figure out that minor little detail, we later realize that there is a time to work late and a time to leave early. A time to keep quiet and a time to tell the boss that you are the best thing to ever happen to the company so that you can get the promotion you have always wanted.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; background-image: initial; background-repeat: initial; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; background-image: initial; background-repeat: initial; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt;">No matter what stage in life we are currently in, or how much time we have left. We need to do two things. First of all, we need to make sure that we have taken the time to know for sure where we are going once this life is over. This is the most important thing we can ever do in our lives!</span></div>
<div align="center" class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; background-image: initial; background-repeat: initial; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt;">Second, We should remember what the Bible tells us in Ecclesiastes 3:4… there is “</span><b><span style="color: black; font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </span></b><span style="color: black; font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt;">A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;” Not a single one of us lives long enough to </span><span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12pt;">dwell on the past, or the negative parts of the stages yet to come. We should simply realize that all of life has ups and downs and use the time we have to focus on the positive. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; background-image: initial; background-repeat: initial; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">

<div align="center" style="background-image: initial; background-repeat: initial; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="color: black;">Every Person Matters</span></span></div>
<div style="background-image: initial; background-repeat: initial; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-image: initial; background-repeat: initial; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">There is an old expression that holds a lot of truth in today’s world. It says, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” This expression becomes evident when one visits a yard sale, searches various online auction websites, or visits a thrift shop.</span></span></div>
<div style="background-image: initial; background-repeat: initial; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-image: initial; background-repeat: initial; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">These places are a proverbial gold mine for some and a dumping ground of unwanted items for others. The person who has a yard sale and sells that box of old baseball cards which has been collecting dust in the attic along with a bunch of other old junk for the past 20 years may be happy because he is uncluttering his life. The person who decided to buy them just for kicks to see if there were any “good ones in there” is even happier when the latest edition of the Beckett Baseball card guide tells him that he can retire early.</span></span></div>
<div style="background-image: initial; background-repeat: initial; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-image: initial; background-repeat: initial; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The same thing is true of an individual. Sometimes, as human beings, we are just a bit like those baseball cards. Sometimes we’ve been collecting dust for a while, or perhaps we just seem like we’re always in the way. If we ever start to feel this way, or if we know of anyone else who does. It is important to remember two things.</span></span></div>
<div style="background-image: initial; background-repeat: initial; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-image: initial; background-repeat: initial; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">First, no matter who we are in this world, our lives affect the lives of others, and the most ironic thing about this life is that we may never know which lives those are until we pass from here into eternity. You may have a profound impact on anyone from a coworker to the young lady who delivers your favorite drink at the local coffee shop you visit every morning. Just the fact that you are there to provide some consistency to their otherwise chaotic life and ever-changing life may bring them the hope that they need to make it through another day.</span></span></div>
<div style="background-image: initial; background-repeat: initial; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-image: initial; background-repeat: initial; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="color: black;">The poem, “No Man is an Island,” which was written by John Donne during the 1600’s, reminds us of this truth. Every human life is connected in some way. We all have something to offer those around us and it is sad when individuals fail to recognize this. Unfortunately, sometimes, instead of seeing the potential and value they have as a person, some have considered the option of suicide, not realizing how many people around them will be left with feelings of guilt because they did not see it coming. Although the person who considers this action may feel that they are relieving a burden from both themselves as well as their loved ones, some surviving family members and friends have spent the rest of their life anguished with guilt because of it. Donne summarized this sentiment very well when he said, “</span><span style="background-image: initial; background-repeat: initial; color: #333333;">Any man's death diminishes me, </span><span style="color: #333333;"><span style="background-image: initial; background-repeat: initial;">Because I am involved in mankind, And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; </span>It tolls for thee.</span>”</span></div>
<div style="background-image: initial; background-repeat: initial; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-image: initial; background-repeat: initial; margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The second thing to remember is that while we are all loved, respected, and valued by other human beings, the love that God has towards us is infinitely greater. He loved all of mankind so much that He sent his only begotten son so that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life. This is the simple truth found in John 3:16. Just a short time ago, we celebrated Easter to commemorate the payment which Christ made on the cross for our sins. All we have to do is accept it. As we go throughout our daily lives, we should try to remember that we matter to those around us, and make it a point to be certain that those around us know that they matter to us as well. Just knowing that their life matters to another single human being on this earth may be all it takes to bring someone, who believes they have no other options, back from the edge and put them on the road to recovery. And remember that if someone is beyond the help that you are able to give them, there is always somewhere else to get them the help they need. </span></span></div>

We started off a little slow, but with each passing year the world continues to send more and more satellites, rovers, and space ships on new and exciting missions, not to mention multiple Google X Prizes and contests.<br />
<br />
Satellites now orbit Mars and on this very day, the Philae European Space Agency Lander that accompanied the Rosetta spacecraft landed on comet 67P over ten years after leaving the Earth. In my opinion, this is outstanding. I hope these breakthroughs will lead to a time when my children's and grandchildren's generation will look back from their colony on the moon or the space station they live on and ask us why it took so long.<br />

I see this as a unique opportunity to thank those who have, do, or ever will wear (i.e. those in the Delayed Entry Program) a United States military uniform.<br />
<br />
I love hearing stories from my family members and friends who were in the military in the past. It is amazing to me how much things have changed, but it is fun to see the things which are the same as well.<br />
<br />
I also love how many businesses and individuals go out of their way to show their appreciation not just on this day, but throughout the year. The patriotic spirit within our nation is refreshing.<br />
<br />
Thank you!<br />

Unfortunately the Expendables I, II, and III are a little more violent than I would have liked. It also came slightly later in many careers than I would have liked as well. These things aside, I'm very glad to have almost all of the most iconic action heroes, which I have always loved watching, in one set of movies. Hopefully there will be more movies like them.<br />

One of the neatest things about our country is the fact that we are able to pick our own leaders... from the mayor of our own town all the way up to the President himself! Every one of us has the ability to make a difference in our nation, just by the vote we cast each election.</div>

If you don’t like the person in office, then help their opponent win the next election... but make sure to support them for now. The person who is elected now is the person the majority of voters, wanted in office. This being the case, make sure to show them the respect that they deserve. One of the biggest reasons people do not accomplish their goals in life is procrastination.<br />
<br />
How many times have you looked back over a day or a week or a year and thought, about how you should have done something sooner. I know that I have done that a few times.<br />
<br />
Something I've been trying to do lately is to pick one goal per day and work on it. I try to I do at least one thing which will help me to accomplish this goal.<br />
<br />
Do the same if you get a chance and we'll work towards our goals together.<br />

I love how his characters have gone from the comics to merchandising to movies. Of course, I can't forget about the part where he has a cameo in almost every Marvel Superhero movie... Brilliant! Half the fun of watching one of these movies is to see where he might pop up.<br />
<br />
Outstanding work, Mr. Lee. I hope you and Marvel/Disney are able to continue creating great stories for many years to come.<br />

To her, and every other person who has ever performed a random act of kindness for one of our troops, I would like to say, Thank You.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.200000762939453px;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.200000762939453px;">I know that I have mentioned this in a previous post, but I think it is mentioning again...</span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: #444444;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.200000762939453px;">The day I deployed, when I was in the store at the airport, a lady bought a drink and a snack for the soldier in front of me, and myself. She did not know the two of us from any other soldier in the world, and she will probably never see us again, but still, she made it a point to tell us "Thank you for your service," both in word and in deed. We were both appreciative of her actions.</span><br style="font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.200000762939453px;" /><br style="font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.200000762939453px;" /><span style="font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.200000762939453px;">She did not know that I had skipped my lunch on that day or that I was rushed through the airport in order to get to our plane because someone had given our group the wrong time to arrive at the airport, or that I would be away from my family for the second Thanksgiving and Valentine's Day in a row, or that I would be missing Christmas, New Year, and our Anniversary as well. This kindhearted lady just laid down her hard earned money in a random act of kindness in tribute to every soldier, airman, sailor, and marine who is fighting for her freedom.</span><br style="font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.200000762939453px;" /><br style="font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.200000762939453px;" /><span style="font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.200000762939453px;">It is the people like the lady at the airport, Amy Adams, and every other person who has done something nice for one of our service members who serve as examples to us all. The gladness which we can bring to another human being by contributing one simple act of kindness without the hope of something in return is simply amazing.</span></span><br />

It is amazing how fast time goes by.<br />
<br />
Since then, I have started posting on Youtube (www.youtube.com/user/davidhtroyer), Instagram, and a few other social media networks. My handle is @davidhtroyer on most forms of social media. Also, I have a few new books on Amazon (www.amazon.com/author/davidhtroyer).<br />
<br />
I also have some new sermons on the Make It Clear Ministries Radio page as well (www.makeitclearnow.org/radio.html) Please check them out if you have an opportunity.<br />
<br />
I have several topics I've been meaning to place in my blog, so hopefully I will have an opportunity to do so soon.<br />

If one can really say that honestly.Happy Memorial Day... If one can really say that honestly.<br />
<br />
Memorial Day is the day we honor those who have paid the ultimate price for their country. They have died so that we can remain free.<br />
<br />
The Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall was at an event I attended today. I was able to explain to my daughter that the wall was special and that people would visit it to see the names of their loved ones on it.<br />
<br />
Another item of interest I came across was a post that I saw. Someone made a good point when they said that Memorial Day was becoming more like Veteran's day. I totally agree with the person who posted that. It is, and there is not much we can do about it. Below is the response I gave. I hope that this helps to put this day, and every patriotic day into perspective. Especially since I realize that there are many people who would love to thank a member of the military, but don't know one.<br />
<br />
<br />
"I can certainly see where you are coming from on this one. Unfortunately, the world we live in is not always as "clean-cut" as we would like it to be. As I listened intently to my Drill Sergeants on the day before we graduated from Basic Training, they gave us one final speech. This time it was on what you are obliged to do when someone tells you "Thank You!" Quite frankly, they told us, "You do not deserve it. You have not been deployed or even been trained (in AIT) to do your job yet. You have not defended this nation for one day in your life." "BUT, they continued, if someone thanks you, you had better keep your mouth shut and listen to them. Let them thank you." The average American doesn't know what a combat patch is, so they will have no clue that you are not returning from Afghanistan or Iraq. And most of them don't even know anyone in the military." Then they told us that when we wore this uniform, regardless of anything we had done or not done in our military career, we are representing EVERYONE who has ever put it on and that if they wanted to thank us, we had better let them. I kind of feel the same way when it comes to Veteran's Day and Memorial Day. Sure, I have deployed now, and I would like to think that I have at least done something to help make America a safer place, at least a little bit, but I know that I am nowhere near as deserving as those who have been deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan several times, or for those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice by dying for their country. However, No matter how undeserving I am in comparison to them, as my Drill Sergeants so graciously informed me, it is my duty to stand there and listen since I may be the only person in the military they are ever able to thank. If I brush them off this time, they will probably not say "Thank You" to the person who is more deserving next time. Just a thought. I am not saying that the Drill Sergeants I had have everything right, but it makes sense to me."<br />
<br />
As you celebrate today, I hope that you will remember those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for their country by honoring their memory on their day. Also, although this day is not for them, please feel free to thank anyone you know who is currently in the military as well (or even those who have served). After all, each and every one of them signed on that dotted line knowing full and well that they could be the one being honored on the next Memorial Day.<br />

This includes the information they would need in order to get in touch with their closest friends and families. <br />
<br />
Between the conveniences provided using our cell phones and the internet, most people find little to no need for the memorization of any information except for maybe their own phone number and address, that is, if these two items are not already on their business cards or permanently affixed to the side of their vehicle.<br />
<br />
This thought had crossed my mind in the past, but what really brought the point home was the fact that I wanted to send some of my friends a post card while I am still deployed. Unfortunately, I realized that an updated address book listing a physical address where my friends could recieve mail has fallen by the wayside. I'm fairly certain that this is true in most cases.<br />
<br />
Either way, the technology we posess is a valuable tool, however, we must also think about "the other side of the coin," as one might say. What if you suddenly found that your area was facing a natural disaster, such as the one faced by the survivors of Hurricaine Katrina in the New Orleans, LA area back in August of 2005.<br />
<br />
Of course, technology had not advanced as far as it has today at that point, but I wonder how many of those people, once they actually found a telephone that worked, actually had at least one current telephone number to a friend or relative memorized. How many do you have memorized today?<br />
<br />
Please don't get panicked and go overboard, but maybe it is time to dust off your trusty little black book, or better yet, start to memorize a few telephone numbers. After all, you do not want to be the guy tying up the line using directory assistance when there at least a thousand scared and impatient people behind you, many of whom will have to do the same.<br />

I always find it funny that St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, was actually born in England. According to what I learned in history class, he was taken to Ireland, found his way back to England, and finally returned to Ireland as a missionary. <br />

So, when you are out celebrating, or just thinking about the day and wondering what it is all about, please take a minute and look up St. Patrick. Find out some of the stories associated with St. Patrick. I'm fairly certain that doing so will not only give you something fun to talk about with your friends while you are celebrating, but it will also improve your overall enjoyment of the holiday in the future as well.<br />

<br />
I love it when someone does something nice for someone else, out of the blue, and has nothing to gain from it. Granted, you should do random acts of kindness for your friends and family, that helps your relationship to grow in a healthy manor and lets you know that you love them. You should also consider doing random acts of kindness for people who you have never met and may never see again.<br />
<br />
An awesome example of this came up just last week (When I wrote this on December 19, 2012, that is) when I was chatting with one of my former students. She asked me if I though she should bake some brownies and bring them to the fire department across the street from her house, and expressed her doubts about doing so because of the fact that most modern-day Americans will not take food from people they don't know.<br />
<br />
I told her that if she wants to do it that she should follow through, but that she should be prepared to eat a few brownies just to prove that there is nothing wrong with them.<br />
<br />
Another random act of kindness is the sending of care packages. Thankfully, I have been on the receiving end lately, but when I leave here, I plan on being on the giving end as well. Fortunately, I will have a better idea of what deployed members of the military need when I get back. (Toiletry items, drink mixes, books, crossword puzzles, batteries - whatever kind you are allowed to send, DVDs/Cds, and anything which will provide lighthearted entertainment to name a few items).<br />
<br />
I know that people give more during the holiday season (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year, etc.), but this is something that we should consider doing all year long. From November until mid January, we kept a candy box for everyone who worked in our area. Soldiers would bring extra candy and snacks which were sent to them and we would all share it. After January, we struggled to even have a box.<br />
<br />
Keep in mind that it does not have to cost you anything to contribute a random act of kindness in order to help mitigate the effects felt by the sea of misery which so many people must swim through on a daily basis. You could trim the neighbor's hedges or mow their lawn, especially if they are elderly or not able to do so for some other reason. You could make it a point to hold the door open and warmly greet everyone you meet on any given day. You could even bring some cans of food you have just sitting on the shelf at home to the local homeless shelter.<br />
<br />
If you have children, you could even get them involved by asking them to donate some of their gently used clothes or toys to a family in need or to any number of charitable organizations. Children are never too young to teach about random acts of kindness or charitable giving... and these lessons may even follow them throughout life.<br />
<br />
There have been many times when I have seen a random act of kindness brighten up someone's day.<br />
<br />
One final example is the day I deployed. When I was in the store at the airport, a lady bought a drink and a snack for the soldier in front of me, and myself. She did not know the two of us from any other soldier in the world, and she will probably never see us again, but still, she made it a point to tell us "Thank you for your service," both in word and in deed. We were both appreciative of her actions.<br />
<br />
She did not know that I had skipped my lunch on that day or that I was rushed through the airport in order to get to our plane because someone had given our group the wrong time to arrive at the airport, or that I would be away from my family for the second Thanksgiving and Valentine's Day in a row, or that I would be missing Christmas, New Year, and our Anniversary as well. This kindhearted lady just laid down her hard earned money in a random act of kindness in tribute to every soldier, sailor, and marine who is fighting for her freedom.<br />
<br />
It is the people like the lady at the airport, and my former student, who serve as examples to us all. The gladness which we can bring to another human being by contributing one simple act of kindness without the hope of something in return is simply amazing.<br />
